Review of Two poems of Toni Morrison ‘Thought’
Two poems of Toni Morrison ‘Thought’
I request readers to please read the poems in the image first and then only my review. Thanks.
First poem lambasts the divide between humanity as a whole and the colored people. The figurative expression of ocean symbolizing the divide and the boats symbolizing the exploitation, bias and discrimination based on color is very poetic. Racism deep rooted in the minds of many communities cutting across scores of nations, reminds us that human evolution was incomplete. The bitterness and shame of the colored in swallowing insults, denials and unfairness of the privileged can never be understood by others who are not colored. Only such powerful poems can throw light on the injustice to them.
Second poem
Being loved and giving love are the two sides of the coin love. Loving another person genuinely carries a price. The price is certainly not materialistic we can infer. Giving up ego, selfishness and overcoming the impact hypes celebrating conditional love are prices. True love transcends materialistic barriers and makes the loved person happy. The expression ‘if you knew the price of coming to you, you would ask nothing but give’ makes it clear that love is nothing but giving without asking. Giving, always giving, unconditionally and selflessly is never easy, and very rarely a person is blessed with such a ‘giving’ heart.
Both poems are straight and simple, still the power of expression and the figurative picture of racism make the poems powerful and disturbing.
