Review of American poet Adele Elise Williams’ poem ‘Violence’
I request readers to read the poem first from the link https://poems.com/poem/violence/
A linear outlook towards crime, violence and social evils is all about distancing from the core of the issue. There is no empathy for the fellow-being even within the institution of family. Lack of human values pushes the vulnerable into addictions and nervous breakdowns or suicides. The question of abetment in pushing a person to a point-of-no-return is never addressed. A judgmental and distancing outlook to those at the brink helps my complacence and I remain a happy conformist.
This poem is straight, and the poet’s choice is the institution family and its indifference to the sufferings of an addict or a terminally ill person. The poem ends with the suicide of a girl inside the university campus. Such incidents are now a routine. Often, we find a suicide of a student suffocating in a coaching centre for competitive exams. We are so used to terrorism by religious groups and some states as well. In the Pune bakery blast in the year 2010 my daughter lost one her thickest friends and we couldn’t console her in person. I woke up to the fact that the ugly nails of violence are too long and we got used to its proximity.
Among other expressions in this lengthy poem the following lines highlight how one finds genuine bonding and empathy pulsating in a pet unlike the family. The genre poetry is all about the genuine love, care or anguish and pain striking the reader. This poem is an example.
