Emily Dickinson’s poem ‘World poet tree day’
The poet has carved a poem with a creative bifurcation of the word poetry as ‘Poet + Tree.’ She found in poetry there are two identical beings, one is a poet and the other a tree. A tree cannot stand an axe due to its vulnerability to sharp tools and a poet cannot withstand biased criticism because of her sensitivity. A poet always stands tall but very sensitive too. From this analogy, with a single word the poet propels the theme of the poem into something exclusive about the poet. The reader effortlessly moves with her from the metaphor tree to the tree of fame. Deciduousness is seasonal for a tree and it will bloom leaves as thickly as before with the onset of next season and stand in public; this is seasonal annually. But can a poet stand the ignominy of just living without the very pulsating creativity she is famous for? Her congruence with creativity and poetry is so genuine an identity within and for the world around as her unique gift. Losing all creativity and living without the poetry that pulsates with her mortal being is shameful and like death for her. The sight of a tree shedding leaves is very common for us and we find only a botanical routine or a natural phenomenon. We do not find anything deeper. Emily does.
