Review of poem ‘Sex, Night’
I request readers
to read the poem from the link above before reading my review. Thanks.
Compared to
most other things myths, illusions and misconceptions probably overshadow the
act of sex. The rejuvenation, the sense of belonging and oneness, the
contentment of mind and physique and above all a sense of relief, none of these
is felt by either of the couples mostly during or after sex. We stumble upon
this bitter truth in private conversation, social media, in many authentic survey
results and in serious literature.
Alegandra Pirazarnik’s poem unveils the duality within the couple that
surfaces on a bed like any other walk of life. The poem starts with a wonderful
metaphor symbolizing a glass of wine is the physique of the partner.
The poem finds the
other person who is the other side of the partner in the mirror of the bed
room. The other person symbolizes artificial and conditional relationship, the
innate emptiness within these relationships that cause anxiety, fear, distrust
and disenchantment on a sensitive mind.
Only both the
physiques are nude. The minds are masked, camouflaged and the utterances
rehearsed. This is very figuratively and poetically highlighted that with the
mirror images there are eight persons in the bed room.
The biggest strength
of this poem is the exposure emptiness in sex and relationships. Is it a modern
phenomenon? A deeper thought reveals the
negativity surrounding the social life invariably sneaks into the bed room from
time immemorial. The poet has succeeded in provoking a thought process on the
emptiness of human relationships in readers’ minds.
