Review of Sylvia Plath’s poem ‘Cinderella’

 Sylvia Plath’s poem ‘Cinderella’

I request readers to read the poem from the above link first, and then my review. Thanks.

Only the title is ‘Cinderella.’ Sylvia’s poem is on a modern day party. The visualization of the participants, their attire and the music in the party is very feminine. The poet has focused on the minute details like the color of a female’s shoes. The glitter and frenzy in the air is aesthetically pictured. At the ending line of this short poem, only the adjective ‘caustic’ wakes up the reader. The ticking of the clock is caustic. The ticking warns that the weekend is over . The rejuvenation is no better than the hectic work schedule of the week. The pause is more stressful than the run. Planning fun and break from the work schedule is no fun as the break ends. The stress and anxiety of modern day life is well highlighted in the back drop of Cinderella. Only a fairy with magical powers could give Cinderella the turn for better. Had there been no Fairy, no chance was there for Cinderella’s fortune. The insecurity and uncertainty and their impact on the subconscious mind cannot be different between working days and week end. The smooth traverse of poem from Cinderella to contemporary life is a model for the beginners, which reflects poet’s mastery over the genre. The poem is not too abstract. We can say the tone is direct only. Still the poem drives the intended message home with a sharp expression.
